The Institute for Girls’ Development promotes excellence in psychotherapeutic and assessment services as well as community programs for girls, transgender and gender nonbinary individuals, young adults and their families. Our services for all ages and all genders are provided through our division, Flourish Therapy and Wellness Center.

Our asset- based model of comprehensive, culturally-responsive services is based on current research on gender development, culturally responsive approaches, and effective psychotherapeutic interventions. We are well- respected in the community as a collaborative team private practice. The Institute is located in Pasadena, California in the heart of bustling Old Town. Our offices are housed in a beautiful, historic building just a short walk away from numerous restaurants, cafes, and shops.

Training: We are currently looking for postdoctoral candidates with a dedication to our mission of empowerment. We provide a training sequence that builds on skills and competencies needed to prepare for independent practice. In addition, the Institute provides socialization into the mental health profession through mentoring, didactic exposure, role modeling, enactment, observational/vicarious learning, supervision and consultative guidance. The Institute therapists work collaboratively together in team consultation and creative program development. Planned activities address the integration of current and evolving psychological knowledge, principles, theories, culturally responsive approaches, legal and ethical concerns, responsible practice management skills, community involvement and public speaking skills. ACCESS TO THE TRAINING MANUAL HERE.

Candidates apply to one of the following two practice areas:

Child and Adolescent Specialty Practice (CASP): CASP specialists work with a variety of issues from ethno-culturally responsive approaches. The specialists on this team provide treatment and assessment for girls and young women ages 0-19, gender nonbinary and transgender youth, families and parents. There is also the opportunity to work with our growing adult clientele. Presenting issues include but are not limited to emotional regulation, anxiety, depression, health concerns, attention and executive functioning, identity development, social skills and neurodivergence, grief, maternal mental health (perinatal/postpartum services) and adjustment to challenging life situations. Modalities include individual, family, parenting, and group therapy. Our specialists work from a variety of theoretical orientations, including CBT, mindfulness-based, attachment-based, humanistic, feminist, developmental, and cultural-relational approaches.

Assessment Specialty and Flourish Therapy and Wellness Center : Candidates have the opportunity to be involved in these specialty practices as well, depending on their interests and our program needs.

Responsibilities would include:

  • Carrying a caseload of individual clients and groups (22-25 clinical hours per week).
  • Leading weekly therapy groups for children or teens, with a range of goals, based on interest and experience.
  • Engaging in supervision with the Institute leadership team to meet board requirements.
  • Participating in weekly team-wide meetings for consultation and training.
  • Working collaboratively with our DBT Specialty team, if accepted into this subspecialty program.
  • Attending Institute Professional Trainings; an educational stipend is provided for additional trainings related to area of interest.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in clinical, counseling or educational psychology and at least 1000 hours of clinical experience.
  • A background in working with children, adolescents, families, and groups.
  • Demonstrated competency and interest in the 4 Essential Criteria for this position: Diversity, Clinical, Educational, and Organizational
  • Ability to work with clients in-person and via telehealth
  • Successful candidates interested in the DBT Subspecialty Training should also have experience working with high risk youth and young adults and previous experience participating on a DBT team, providing individual DBT therapy and leading DBT skills groups. Previous experience using behavioral and mindfulness approaches is a plus.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) is required for all candidates.

Work Schedule: This is a full-time position at 40+ hours per week. The initial ramp up of 2 – 4 months are part time at around 25- 29 hours per week until full time hours are reached. Supervised activities include clinical hours in individual, family and group therapy; supervision; training; orientation; practice development; program development, community education; and some research opportunities. Clinical hours are generally mid morning into the evening hours; some weekend hours are an option.

Consultation and Training:  Supervision meets the standards required by the Board of Psychology. Additional training and consultation are provided.

Compensation: This is a full-time position that has a 3 month onboarding phase. The first 3 months are paid at a part-time, hourly rate. During this time you will join orientation, training and work to reach the case load benchmarks required for full time employment. Once this orientation period ends and you have reached the necessary benchmark the full time position offers a base salary (minimum guaranteed income) plus a percentage based bonus that combine for a competitive annual salary range of $50,000 – $75,000+, 2 weeks paid vacation, accrued over a year, 9 paid holidays, 6 sick days, 2 PTO days with an  additional 2 PTO days for licensure and exam activities, group health, dental, and vision insurance plan, 401k plan with employer matching, annual educational and professional membership stipends.
