Facebook Safety
by Kayte Heslet, MS, MFTI
Hey Teens! Have you heard about the newest addition to Facebook?
Facebook can be a great way to stay connected with friends, but sometimes people cross the line with mean comments, threats, or worse. But how can you stay informed about how to deal if you see it happening to you or someone you know?
Facebook recently opened up its Safety Center (http://www.facebook.com/help/?safety)--all about helping Facebook users deal with stuff like keeping your info and profile safe, handling threats and bullying, what to do if you see something inappropriate on Facebook, and lots of other situations that might make you feel unsafe or concerned about someone else's safety.
Here are a few of the topics covered:
- how to keep your profile information private so that random strangers can't find out your email address, or see your photos and wall
- what to do if a friend writes a post threatening to hurt themselves
- how to un-tag yourself from a photo posted by someone else
- what to do if someone is pretending to be you on Facebook
- how to handle unwanted messages, wall posts, or chats
- how to report objectionable content on Facebook
- and what happens when you do make a report (it stays anonymous!)
Parents! There is also a special section of the Safety Center that discusses how you can help your teen if she's being bullied or threatened, or finds objectionable or concerning material.
